Brandy Age Designations Explained: VS, VSOP, XO and More

Why age designations matter

Courvoisier VS Cognac Brandy

For many brandies, ageing is the biggest driver of flavour and price. Longer ageing can add smoother texture and deeper notes of vanilla, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate and spice. But not every label uses the same system, and some use “house style” marketing terms that do not correspond to a strict age.

Cognac age designations

Cognac commonly uses a set of standard designations. These refer to the age of the youngest eau de vie ("water of life" - the clear, colourless brandy) in the blend, not the average age.

VS

VS stands for “Very Special”. It indicates a younger Cognac, typically lively and fruit forward with lighter oak influence. VS Cognac such as Martell VS is often the best value for cocktails and mixed drinks because it delivers Cognac character without the cost of long ageing.

VSOP

VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”. Expect more oak integration, richer dried fruit notes and a smoother finish than VS. Many drinkers find VSOP like Courvoisier VSOP the sweet spot for sipping because it balances maturity with price.

XO

XO stands for “Extra Old”. XO Cognac is matured longer and often shows deeper complexity: candied orange, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, spice and a lingering finish. XO bottles such as Remy Martin XO are usually aimed at sipping rather than mixing, though it can elevate luxury cocktails.

Napoleon, Extra and other terms

Some Cognacs use terms like Napoleon or Extra. These can indicate a style or age tier, but the specifics vary by house. If you want to compare accurately, look for official age designation, product notes and price position within the range.

Armagnac age statements

Armagnac often uses similar terms to Cognac, but it is also common to see explicit age statements (such as 10 years) or vintages (single harvest year). Vintage Armagnac can be a great gift because the date is meaningful and the flavour can be remarkably concentrated.

Calvados and other brandies

Soberano Spanish Brandy

Calvados has its own common terms, and many producers also use age statements. Younger Calvados is fresh, crisp and apple driven, while older bottlings become richer and spicier with baked apple, toffee and oak.

For Spanish brandy and some international brandies, age terms can be less standardised. Solera systems also complicate the idea of a single “age” because multiple ages are blended together over time.

How to shop by age without overpaying

  • Choose VS for cocktails: excellent value and plenty of character in mixed drinks.
  • Choose VSOP for versatile sipping: usually the best balance of maturity and price.
  • Choose XO for slow sipping: deeper complexity and a longer finish, often priced for gifting.
  • Look for age statements: when available, they make comparisons easier across brands.
